The IRA LLC strategy is a legal option to pursue. The issue I'm driving with this post is that there are many marketing-focused companies who aren't even ahead of you in the game of understanding self directed IRA strategy and compliance.

There are many places you can download an LLC Operating Agreement template for under $15 or even free. If you were to take that template and insert Internal Revenue Code Section 4975 somewhere in it, you'll have almost exactly what most IRA LLC promoters charge $3k for.

So my suggestion isn't "save yourself $3k and do it the naive way". My suggestion is that you don't know what you don't know - and most of these marketing-focused companies are in the same boat with you. There are plenty of areas where a small mistake can be made in the formation and documentation of an IRA LLC that can plant a seed that will grow into a large problem in the future. And in such a case, you won't hear sirens or get an immediate knock on your front door. Instead, you will silently be racking up taxes, penalties, and interest until the problem is exposed. A little bit of homework should help you find IRA LLC providers who know what they are doing. If you call us and go through our prospect discovery process, you'll probably notice a big difference between us and the multiplying pool of marketing-focused companies.

Also, check out the post "<a href="/2008/06/09/whats-so-special-about-the-ira-llc/" rel="nofollow">What's so special about the IRA LLC</a>".

I've been researching self directed/checkbook Ira's. As a result I have come across the web site mentioned previously. If I understand correctly a checkbook Ira is a viable option for retirement investing however transactions that can be conducted through it must meet stringent guidelines set forth by the various regulatory agencies.
